Who Is She?

T.D. Montena was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where poverty, religious rigidity, and the formidable presence of women shaped her earliest understanding of the world.

She was raised among women who were bold enough to endure, resourceful enough to build from scarcity, and complex enough to carry wounds they had never been given the language to name. Their strength was real. So was the inheritance beneath it.

Military service also runs through the architecture of her family story—from her maternal grandfather and biological father to the men she married and the son she raised. Duty, departure, discipline, reinvention, and the private cost of service became familiar long before those themes entered her work.

Montena writes from the place where inheritance meets examination. Her work considers not only what a life survives, but what it can finally understand about itself once survival is no longer the only task.
